Varma (2020) is a Tamil-language romantic drama film directed by Bala. It is a remake of the Telugu film Arjun Reddy (2017). The movie stars Dhruv Vikram in his debut role as Varma, a highly talented yet impulsive medical student who struggles with anger issues and self-destruction after facing heartbreak.
Varma falls deeply in love with his junior, Megha, played by Megha Chowdhury. Their passionate romance is disrupted by societal and family pressures, leading to their painful separation. Unable to cope with the loss, Varma spirals into alcohol and substance abuse, losing control over his career and personal life. The story follows his turbulent journey as he battles his inner demons while still yearning for his lost love.
The film was initially meant to be the official Tamil remake of Arjun Reddy, but it was later shelved by the producers, and another version titled Adithya Varma was released instead. Varma was eventually released directly on an OTT platform in 2020. Despite its troubled production history, the film remains notable as Dhruv Vikram’s first acting project and for Bala’s unique approach to the intense, emotional storyline.
