Sufiyum Sujatayum (2020) is a Malayalam romantic drama directed by Naranipuzha Shanavas. The film follows the poignant love story of Sujatha (Aditi Rao Hydari), a mute Hindu girl, and Sufi (Dev Mohan), a devout dervish, set in a traditional village. Sujatha, despite her inability to speak, expresses her emotions through dance, and she forms a deep bond with Sufi. However, their love is forbidden due to religious and societal barriers.
Fate intervenes when Sujatha’s parents arrange her marriage to Rajeev (Jayasurya), a businessman based in Dubai. Heartbroken, she leaves behind her unfulfilled love and moves on with her new life. Years later, Sujatha is drawn back to her past when Sufi’s demise brings her and Rajeev back to their homeland. The journey becomes an emotional reckoning, unraveling suppressed emotions and unresolved feelings.
With soulful music by M. Jayachandran and stunning cinematography, Sufiyum Sujatayum is a visually poetic and deeply melancholic tale of love, loss, and fate. It explores the themes of unfulfilled desires and spiritual connection, making it a touching cinematic experience. Released directly on Amazon Prime Video, it was the first Malayalam film to bypass theatrical release due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
